Vianney House

The Vianney House is a residence for those in the Diocese of Lake Charles who want to discern seriously God’s call to a vocation to the diocesan priesthood, but who have not yet made a decision to enter the seminary. Because of its structured schedule of prayer, instruction, and direction, residents are blessed with enlightenment from God which gives a man confidence in what he must do next.

Life at Vianney House moves around three areas of focus: 

I.)  Prayer
Holy Mass, Liturgy of the Hours, and Adoration underlie the daily schedule for Vianney residents. The schedule of prayer helps a man to develop discipline and to grow in his love for God. Regular conferences and formation are also given as an instruction in the spiritual life and discernment. 

II.) Study and Work
Residents are enrolled full-time at the local university or community college and have a part-time job or are working full-time. In addition to forming habits of the soul, the residents learn to form good study skills and a sound work-ethic. 

III.) Community Life
A sense of fraternity and stability is established among the residents through community meals, outings and recreation. The bonds that develop are truly life-changing and tremendously helpful in facing the challenges of following God’s will. It also gives the residence a sense of the seminary community, though on a smaller scale.

The discernment program at Vianney House runs for one full school year (August-May). At the end of the year, the resident, having invested himself fully in the program, should have received more than enough enlightenment to make a decision about his next step. He leaves with a clear conscience and the freedom to follow God’s plan. In addition, the man leaves more deeply spiritual, better equipped academically, and with plenty of life skills.  

The Vianney House is not for men who know they will become priests. It is meant for those who do not know but want to find out. Regardless of whether he goes to seminary afterwards, he will have acquired virtues and built confidence and conviction so as to live as a holy Christian man in the world.
